England’s first esports team to be launched
The FA and esports company ESL have partnered to form a national esports football team, which will be known as the eLions.
The governing body is looking to recruit the nation’s best FIFA players with online qualifiers taking place on Saturday 9th March and Sunday 10th March, the live final will be held on the 14th March. The tournament is open to FIFA 19 players on both PS4 and Xbox One, however, players must be over the age of 16.
The FA’s chief commercial and development officer, Mark Bullingham said: “This presents an exciting opportunity for Three Lions fans to help form a new chapter in England’s history. FIFA 19 is played by hundreds of millions of players daily, so we have a great chance to engage with these as part of our efforts to continue to grow the game in England.”
"The FA prides itself on being a modern, innovative organisation that strives to engage and inspire all generations of football fans.”
The newly assembled team will represent England at their first event, the invite-only FIFA eNationals Cup exhibition event, which takes places next month.
